Thawing Out Frozen Pipes
Share
Living in Abilene, we know cold snaps can happen! And with those dips in temperature comes the risk of "frozen plumbing pipes." When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands, creating immense pressure that can lead to ruptures and major water damage.
Here's what you need to know:
- Identify the Risk: Pipes in unheated areas like crawl spaces, attics, garages, and outside walls are most vulnerable.
- Warning Signs: No water coming from a faucet, or a strange banging sound when you turn on the water.
- What to Do (If Frozen but Not Burst): You might be able to thaw a visible frozen pipe using a hairdryer, heat lamp, or warm towels. Never use an open flame!
- If Burst: Turn off your main water supply immediately, open affected faucets, and call a professional.
Prevention is key: insulate pipes, seal cracks, and consider letting a small drip run from faucets during extreme cold. But if you suspect frozen or burst pipes, call a plumber quickly to minimize damage.
